The findings from a study tour to Canada to learn more about how schools attain equity and achievement are to be published shortly by ALL.

Lessons from Canada, authored by Tom Greenwell and Chris Bonnor, tracks the discussions and findings from the tour, detailing a set of recommendations to help persuade Australian policy makers, media and the public that an equal school system is possible.

The tour of twelve of Australia’s leading educators and researchers visited schools, spoke with senior system leaders, talked to professional associations and heard from advocates. In Ontario and British Columbia, and Quebec. Supported by Australian Learning Lecture, the tour was organised by Leading Educators Around the Planet.

Lessons from Canada comes at a critical time. There is increasing concern about enrolment segregation and the concentration of disadvantage in Australia’s schools – and a growing interest in what other countries and jurisdictions may be doing to avoid what seems to be Australia’s school future.

Recent concerns, (including from the Review to Inform a Better and Fairer Education System), refer to the increasing segregation of school enrolments; and unequal access to quality resources by level of student advantage.

Inequity and enrolment segregation are seen as contributing to a disproportionate impact of student peers on overall student outcomes. These are systemic issues and point to the need for solutions beyond the individual school level. They are expected to become increasingly prominent in 2024 and beyond.

The publication follows on from Choice and Fairness: a proposal for a common framework for all Australian schools. It is the latest publication by ALL aimed at energising the conversation around equity and structural change. Previous publications are  Beyond ATAR, which calls for a Learner Profile for all students (a recommendation taken up by the Shergold Report) and The Future School based on a global scan of schools meeting the challenge of our changing times.
